artist statement

For the past two years I have been exploring the structural components, visual imagery, and social implications of human adipose tissue, or fat cells. I have visually explored these aspects by merging representational fashion imagery, text and mixed media with abstract, cellular forms. While the current issues of body image, the media, and America’s ever widening waistline are peripheral components; my focus is on the literal manifestation of human expansion. I am interested in the juxtaposition of mass consumption and the growing of the body, which is frequently seen as ugly, or distasteful, with the often beautiful, vibrant scientific documentation of fat cells. I am also interested in the materiality of human fat. It can be manifested as a gelatinous belly, as a flapping arm or as a yellowish gray matter in a high resolution MRI. I am experimenting and discovering how that materiality can translate successfully into a painting while still referencing the ideas-the structure, imagery, and social implications of fat cells that I find to be the unifying theme of these paintings.
